Belgrade, Serbia's acting President Aleksandar Vučić said on Wednesday evening that a visit by US President Donald Trump to Serbia could be arranged before the end of Trump's term, if Vučić becomes prime minister or deputy prime minister.
Vučić, who leads the Aleksandar Vučić-United Serbia electoral list for the October 25 early parliamentary polls, made the comment during an appearance on B92 TV. Asked whether Trump could visit Serbia, he said that he believed such a trip would be possible if he remained politically influential in the country.
He also said that Serbia must stay on its path toward the European Union, but added that it should do so in a rational way and pay attention to the messages coming from Brussels. For background on Serbia's political developments, see the latest news.
In the same interview, Vučić said he understood the message behind the appointment of EU observers for the election campaign. He claimed that the same people would again try to raise tensions and mislead the public, referring to the previous election cycle.
Vučić also said that Serbia would have observers from Russia, the United States and many other countries, adding that they would be able to draw their own conclusions about the vote.
Separately, Vučić said Croatia was interfering in Serbia's elections more than any other country and that Belgrade had sent a protest note to Zagreb through the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said the note was important as a formal record of Serbia's objection to what he described as open interference in its electoral process.
The October 25 parliamentary election will be closely watched by international observers, with Serbia's relations with the EU, the US and neighboring Croatia remaining part of the broader political context.
