The Kovačica wind energy complex is set to expand its capacity significantly with the new Pupin wind farm project.
- Pupin wind farm adds 95.5 MW to Kovačica complex.
- Total capacity will reach nearly 200 MW with 54 turbines.
- Project financed by international lenders including EBRD.
Serbia’s Kovačica wind energy complex is moving toward 200 MW of installed capacity after the addition of the 95.5 MW Pupin wind farm, a €140 million investment supported by international lenders and renewable energy developers.
The new project will nearly double the size of the original Kovačica wind farm, which began commercial operation in 2019 with 104.5 MW. Once completed, the combined site will have 54 turbines, up from 38, after the installation of 16 Nordex wind turbines for the Pupin unit.
According to the project figures, Pupin is expected to generate around 220 GWh a year. That volume is roughly enough to cover the electricity needs of more than 40,000 households.
The development is being carried out by Enlight Renewable Energy and Serbian developer New Energy Solutions, which also worked together on the original Kovačica wind farm. The financing package includes support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Erste Group and Erste Bank.
Construction works are being handled by a Serbian consortium led by WD Concord West and Elektrozapad, while Nordex supplied the turbines. The project highlights the continuing role of local contractors in larger renewable energy schemes in Serbia.
For Serbia’s power system, the extra wind capacity could increase domestic renewable generation and ease reliance on imports during periods of strong wind. Its actual impact will depend on output forecasting, balancing arrangements, grid availability and market prices at the time electricity is sold.
The expansion also points to a broader trend in Serbia’s energy sector, where existing wind sites are being enlarged rather than built entirely from scratch. For background on the country’s power market and infrastructure push, see latest news.
