Technology company United Cloud has said it will not interfere with the editorial independence of Nova.rs, after concerns were raised that changes in the portal’s management could limit the ability of journalists and editors to publish independently.
“As a provider of software services, we have not interfered and will not interfere in the editorial independence and decisions of our clients, nor do we have the right to do so,” the company said.
The statement came after nine media organizations issued an open letter warning that removing the technical and editorial permissions of existing editors and administrators at Nova.rs would amount to direct involvement in an effort to gain control over one of Serbia’s most influential independent news portals.
The signatories included the Media Association, the Online Media Association, the Independent Journalists’ Association of Vojvodina, the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia, Local Press, the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation, the Nezavisnost media union, the Association of Independent Electronic Media and the Journalists’ Association of Serbia.
The letter was addressed to United Cloud CEO Dejan Kocić and the management of Alpac Capital.
The case has drawn attention because Nova.rs is a major independent outlet in Serbia, and any change affecting its newsroom access or publishing rights would be closely watched by journalists, media groups and readers.
